When someone thinks of site ranking, they often make the mistake of thinking that ranking is a general term and that all rankings mean the same thing. That is not the case at all. Alexa ranking and Google pagerank are two entirely different types of ranking. A site can have an amazing Google pagerank and have an awful Alexa rank. That does not mean that the site is not a good site or that it is not generating traffic. In order to better understand your site’s rank, you need to know the difference between the two.
Alexa ranking refers to the ranking that is determined by the Alexa toolbar. When someone uses the Alexa toolbar to search for information, the use is tracked. Sites that receiving the most traffic through the Alexa toolbar receive a higher Alexa rating. If someone visits the site without using the Alexa toolbar, the visit does not get tracked and thus does not increase the site’s Alexa ranking. The Alexa ranking is not the most valuable ranking that a site can have. Many sites would rather have a high Google pagerank than a high Alexa rank because they look at the Google pagerank as being a more beneficial asset.
Google pagerank is determined by the number of inbound links a site has. The html code is used to collect the data. A site could have a very high Alexa ranking but a very low Google pagerank because it does not have any viable inbound links. There are many different ways that a site can get inbound links. It can link with other sites directly or add links to content that is added to article directories. The links allow Google to know that the site is relevant and being used. It is important to realize that unlike the Alexa ranking, Google uses specific algorithms to determined if a site is useful or not. Alexa ranking does not depend on the usefulness of a site. It just views the number of visit’s a site gets.
If you have a site, you will want to worry about your Google pagerank over your Alexa rank. If you have a high Google pagerank, you should be getting a fair amount of traffic to your site. There are many amazing sites that do not have a high Alexa ranking simply because their site visitors do not use the Alexa toolbar. Having a low Alexa rank is not always a bad thing.
